DESCRIPTION OF THE ORGANIZATION
The Office for Solidarity and Cooperation was created by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid with the aim of informing, coordinating activities, promoting education programs and generating knowledge in relation to social issues as well as opening new ways of collaboration and social commitment through its volunteering programmes within the university framework.

All these considerations are considered and understood as an appropiate instrument of actioning and also necessary to act against the different ways of exclusion, marginalization and to provide attention to social groups with fewer opportunities.
Co development, integration and interculturality accentuate their orientation.
Unequivocally, the Office for Solidarity and Cooperation was created with an open and pluralistic spirit in where – on one side – we do listen and receive any suggestion and ways to collaborate from all over our university community, organizations, social groups and institutions identified with these perspectives, but also with the determination to establish a line of work, action and an own and identified intervention.

The Office for Solidarity and Cooperation – UAM is integrated into the General Foundation of the UAM. It works in three different areas;

1. Volunteering and International Cooperation Area:
There are actually four volunteer programs which take place in the university campus or in the surroundings areas; Environment Volunteering Program, Seniors Support Volunteering Program, Entertainment Volunteer Program in Hospital, Suppporting people with disabilities Volunteer Program.
This area works with four International Programs; European Volunteer Service (EVS, Youth in Action Program); United Nations Volunteer Programme and the Millennium Development Goals which main areas are health, education and environment and Information and Communication Technology; Program of Sensitization and Supporting Volunteering in Western Sahara.

PROJECT ENVIRONMENT:
The Solidarity Action and Cooperation bureau of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid – UAM is settled in the campus of the university which is situated in Cantoblanco, 15km north of the city of Madrid, close to municipalities as Alcobendas, San Sebastián de los Reyes, Tres Cantos and Colmenar; and close to important environmental locations and mountain sights as the Valdelatas Wood, Mount of El Pardo, the Port of Somosierra and the Guadarrama mountain range.
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid has over 30.000 students, nationals and internationals, and its campus holds all along the academic years several cultural events, sports activities as well as its regular academic seminars, conferences and meetings in which volunteers are invited to participate in.
Volunteers will spend most of their volunteer time in PRODIS Foundation, an institute which develops a specific model of higher education adapted to young people with mental disability.
Also they will be providing support to the activities developed from the Disability Area of the Solidarity Action Bureau, which works for the full integration of disabled students, as well as to promote awareness about disability matters within the university community.
The global aim of the project is to give professional training to young people with mental disabilities, develop their interpersonal skills and their immersion into the labor market. In addition to these activities, volunteers will support other programs such as the elderly support program with aims like to decrease the loneliness feelings and inactivity some elderly people fall into; and activities in the context of international volunteerism as attending seminars, participating in volunteer awareness to students, seminars organization, elaboration of a welcome guide to further volunteers.
Solidarity and intergenerational values are a key stone to the program and match with the priorities of the Youth in Action program. Moreover we look forward to integrating values such as equality and the recognition of disability as part of the human diversity and solidarity. There is no substitution of work for volunteers.
Volunteer will live in the city of Madrid, in a shared flat with private room. They will be monthly provided with pocket money, lodgment, food and transportation through bank transfer except for the first month that they will be paid via check instead.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR VOLUNTEERS:
Through the participation in our project, the volunteers who are involved will have the opportunity to develop social skills and competences to work with disadvantaged groups.
Being involved into programs such the one from PRODIS will provide them the option to learn and contribute to social inclusion. It will also be an excellent way to make clients feel that they are also part of the european project.
The volunteers will be a key element in the dinamization of the group and they will also be representatives of an european youth movement.
The Office for Solidarity and Co-operation – UAM collaborates with people with intellectual disabilities coming from the hand of PRODIS Foundation and our Disability Area. The activities will be specifically detailed depending on the specific needs of each volunteer.
– Collaboration with PRODIS Foundation in activities destined to promote and to support the social and labor insertion of young people with intellectual disabilities ( Filing and Organization, New Technologies, English, Culture and Society and so on)
– Participation in daily activities carries out by the Disability Awareness Area from our office; support, accompaniment and adapted transport service for people with sensory disabilities. To benefit the social integration and the labor insertion of people with functional disabilities.
– Participation in local volunteering activities to support elderly people; free time and leisure time activities (crafts, theatre…).
– Collaboration on administrative tasks carry out in the Area of International Volunteering; filing and registration of sending and hosting EVS projects conduct by the office since its origin.
– Collaboration in the Week of Solidarity and other events. The Week of Solidarity involves a series of events (workshops, film forums, conferences, courses …) for which help is needed with many tasks, for example, promotion, organization and advertising, among other. They will also participate in the initial trainings provided by the office to new volunteers, telling them about their project and helping us with the dissemination of the program.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
The profiles we are looking for are those ones with social and communication skills, with ability and team work motivation, tolerant, flexible, sensitive and aware of disabilities issues and able to transmit their energy.
Throughout the year we are receiving a large number of applications for our project. The person who is in charge of the EVS will inform all of them about the period of time in which the selection process will take place, information about the project and the activities.
Before the selection process starts, we do inform all the organizations and applicants who have contacted us and who show interest in our host project. The selection is made with all the applications we received.
First of all, we will make a selection between all the CVs and motivation letters that we will be receiving. All the short-listed candidates will receive a questionnaire which needs to be filled out and sent back to us. This questionnaire will contain questions regarding the different motivations, reasons and personal expectations that took them to apply for our project.
Considering that the beneficiaries in large part are people with disadvantages of communication skills and social interaction, we will try to select those volunteers who show a high motivation and capacities to work with disabled people. It is essential that candidates show a deep interest to be part of our project.
There is a meeting arranged between the EVS coordinator and the responsible person of the activities taking place in PRODIS, where they check over the CVs, motivation letters and questionnaires. We will analyze and discuss which ones the most suitable candidates are, taking into account not just the CVs but also the motivation letters, and what the project means for them, as a non-formal education experience.
There will be a shortlist of 5-7 candidates, who will be phone interviewed. After that, we will finally select two people for being European volunteers in our project.
The activities do not require special skills beyond motivation and respect for diversity and acceptance of people with disabilities.
There is no replacement of jobs. Each of the centers where the volunteers will participate with different activities has a wide number of staff members, apart from local volunteers or students doing their period of internship.
