The organization: Servicio Civil Internacional Madrid
Service Civil International (SCI) is the Spanish branch of the officially registered international movement International Civil Service that since 1920 works for peace and understanding
between peoples. The International Civil Service promotes since more than 90 years
volunteering workcamps connecting people around the world with local organizations that
need volunteers.
SCI’s philosophy is that when working voluntarily with people from other cultures or other
characteristics bridges cultures and stereotypes tend to break. These general aims became
reality each year when over 300 volunteers (two from each nationality) collaborate on
nonprofit organizations projects around the world, offering the opportunity for an intense
experience of intercultural learning. We also welcome a similar number of foreign volunteers in projects in Spain.
The project: Volunteers Promoting Volunteering
The main objective of the project is to promote international volunteering done by people who are themselves international volunteers like EVS.
The volunteer will collaborate in carrying on our activities, according to the annual planning of SCI, supporting the professionals and the active members of SCI in promoting volunteering, viewed as a factor of change and social improvement, and its values among the Spanish youth.
Among others, EVS volunteers will be involved in following activities:
1. Promote international volunteering in its various forms and programs: Provision of
information and orientation to young people that are willing to participate in our
exchange program (short term and long term volunteering) or any other international
programs like EVS.
2. Get involved in the process of sending and receiving volunteers to international
workcamps. We usually send and receive around 500 volunteers each year to
nonprofit organizations’ projects.                                                                                                      3. Incorporate and promote the presence of volunteers of different nationalities and
cultures into our local SCI volunteer groups (Snacks on the street, Spanish classes,
North-South and Ecosphere). We consider valuable learning and intercultural
exchange that occurs when people from different cultures volunteer together.
4. Organization, participation and development in the intercultural awareness workshops
organized during the week; learning about human rights, fair trade, alternative
economy, social exclusion, etc.
5. Participate in the organization of specific training for the Spanish volunteers who will
participate in work camps.
6. Meetings with other voluntary organizations at regional and national level.
7. Collaboration in the preparation of information materials and dissemination: monthly
digital newsletter, posters, brochures, calendar of peace.
8. Assistance to fairs or forums of voluntary service or local associations.
9. Participation to international volunteer camps that we organize in our country.

The daily program will have a duration of 6 hours 5 days a week. There will be 2 consecutive free days/ week and 2 days of holiday for each month of the project. In order to facilitate the
participation of a high number of volunteers, some activities will take place during the weekend. In these cases, the number of working hours done by the volunteer will be adjusted, he/she will be working fewer hours or taking days off afterwards so that the total number of working hours per week does not exceed 35.
