Bona Fides Association and Dansk ICYE are looking for 1 volunteer for Fjord&Bælt – a combined tourist attraction, research and outreach institution, that advocates the knowledge of marine life in Danish waters!

Location: Kerteminde, Fyn, Denmark
Dates: 08.01.2025 – 07.01.2026
Duration: 12 months
Application deadline: 06.11.2024
DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Fjord&Bælt is a research and outreach facility, that advocate the knowledge of marine life in Danish waters. At the facility, we have daily training and research of our three porpoises and three harbour seals. Our animals are located in the bay of Kerteminde, meaning their pool areas are located in the ocean. We work closely together with the Marine Biological Research Center located next to Fjord&Bælt. Here there are three male grey seals and one river otter.
The trainer team at Fjord&Bælt consists of 4 trainers and one zookeeper student. Besides the trainers, we also have interns, both Danish and international speaking, meaning our daily communication is in English. In order to show our interns the Danish culture, we also make an effort to arrange social gatherings outside of work.
Your main tasks will be to assist in the daily care and research of our marine mammal collection, which will include the daily cleaning of all animal areas and assisting in the many daily training and research sessions.
Furthermore, since the animals need to be taken care of all year-round, the working hours will also be during weekends and holidays.
Lastly, we often need to pick up fish or drive to the vet with blood samples, therefore, it is preferred that you have a driver’s license.

BEING AT THE PROJECT
The role of the intern will be to help with the daily flow in the fish kitchen and participate in the feedings/training sessions of our animals. In the season where the center is open, it is also important to help give our guests a great experience, which means interacting with them, answering their questions and so on.
As a volunteer at Fjord&Bælt, you will discover a lot about porpoises and seals, both their biology and how they live in nature. We do a lot of research, especially with our porpoises, and through this you will learn a lot about them as a species. You will also have the opportunity to learn about their daily husbandry and care, and the basic rules of how to train animals. Finally, you will also gain an understanding of animal life and ecosystems in the Danish waters.
