project description
The care home for old people Seniorenzentrum St. Raphael is located in the city of Titisee-Neustadt. The supporter of the institution is the registered charitable association called “Caritas-Seniorenzentrum St. Raphael e.V.“ The care and support of residents in the old-age care home St. Raphael is organized by an all-inclusive (mind and body) programme. The newest knowledge is used in the areas of nursing care, medicine, and social aspects. Meeting the individual needs of the residents is a team effort. The residents, family members, doctors and the care specialists all work together. Basic care, treatment care, and social care are all focused on the resident.
Seniorenzentrum St. Raphael old-age care home has a long history of volunteer work, since 2007 it has hosted 7 EVS volunteers.
The use of European Volunteers is mainly for the social care and daytime support of the residents. Volunteers can co-design the daily programme. They are supported by the nursing support staff.

accommodation, food and transport arrangements
Volunteers get a single room in a separate home near the institution. Volunteers get their meals for free at St. Raphael.
To travel around the area, volunteers get a monthly transportation ticket. This includes free-use of all the public transportation of the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald transportation authority region. Volunteers can also use the ticket in the bordering counties of Lörrach, Waldshut-Tiengen, Schwarzwald-Baar and Ortenau on: workdays after 2pm, 24 hours on weekends and during school holidays.

training during the project
To decrease problems from the start, volunteers go to important introduction seminars where they’ll receive information about the institution and their duties.
There is continuous professional support for the volunteers. One example of support is regular reflection talks. A neutral person from outside of the core group will lead these talks.
Apart from the compulsory EVS training cycle provided by the National Agency there is also weekly language training at the local adult education center.

volunteer profile
Volunteers should be interested in social work in the area of old-age care. They should also be open to working with old people who need care. Some of the residents may also have old-age diseases of the mind (for example, Alzheimer’s).
Volunteers should be able to connect with other people.
Basic knowledge of the German language is helpful for the daily contact with: the residents, day-guests of the institution, family members and co-workers.
Learning the German language should not be the volunteers’ only or main motivation for volunteering with this project.

how to apply
Volunteers should send us their CV and motivation letter in English as well as later also complete a questionnaire they’ll get upon request. The selection of volunteers will be based on motivation. It will not be based on background, gender, language skills, or level of education.

additional information
Young people who are interested in the occupational field of medical and health care are in particular invited for this project. We’ll help with finding places for vocational training or recognition of already existing qualifications in this field, if desired.

The St. Martin care home for old people is in the city of Löffingen. The supporter of this institution is the hospital charity foundation in Löffingen. This is a legally independent public charity; it is not for profit. The care and support of residents in the old-age care home St. Martin is organized by an all-inclusive (mind and body) programme.
