PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The main goal of the project is to contribute to the spreading of the cultural heritage of the 500-year-old city of Funchal, the “capital” of the Portuguese island of Madeira. The main tasks of the volunteer are to study the history of the city so that he/she can guide visitors (foreign and even locals) through the old part of the town and other historical buildings such as the old Jesuits’ College and Church, the City Hall and the “Palace” of the Regional Government.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITIES

a. Collaborate in AAUMa’s attractions by performing guided tours or assisting the visitors in the service points (25 weekly hours);
b. To research scientific articles, chapters, and excerpts of technical and scientific publications in the field of social sciences (5 weekly hours);
c. Writing articles for advertising on various platforms, both on paper and digital;
d. Performing translations of scientific documents;
e. Collaborate in the organization and promotion of exhibitions and other cultural activities;
f. Take part in On-arrival and Mid-Term training, held by the Erasmus+ Portuguese National Agency;
g. To promote and to participate in other activities developed by AAUMa, as well as proposing possible projects and activities to undertake as personal projects.

ARRANGEMENTS

The chosen volunteer will share a room (double or triple) at the University of Madeira’s Student Residence, which is about 15-20 minutes (walking distance) from the workplaces. In their room, the volunteers will have a shared closet, bathroom, desk, chair, and bookcase, as well as Internet access. All the expenses related to the accommodation are covered by the host organization.

Additionally, each volunteer will receive a food allowance and pocket money on a monthly basis.

PROFILE OF THE VOLUNTEER

The volunteer should be a patient and persistent person, who is always trying to learn more and keep himself/herself busy. Interest for history and culture is a plus and a quite good level of English language is a must (at least B1).

The volunteer has to be between 18 and 30 years, with: good integration capability; willingness to share experiences and cultural habits.
