EYFON – European Youth Forum, a meeting centre at the castle Forchenstein in Neumarkt/Styria provides a space for the promotion of European values and principles amoung young people. Professional talks, presentations, and workshops alternate with fun social activities, cultural excursions, and sports events. Our focus is not only on the obvious question of individual nationality versus the European Community but also, among others, on tolerance within the different regions of Europe, on specific cultural characteristics, or on different approaches to questions like migration. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

 An alternative school „Schule im Pfeifferhof” is a non-profit institution initiated by parents for their children. The school was established by the association “Mit Kindern leben” in 1993. A team of eight teachers is responsible for education of 85 children. The school works according to reform-pedagogical principles (Montessori, Piaget), which means that the work is oriented at the needs and wishes of children. The learning methods are based on “practical” work and on projects. One of the principles of our school is “learning by doing”. We try hard to prepare a surrounding for our children which enables them to make their own experiences, where they can do both, acquire cultural techniques and develop social competences. They also learn to handle rules and borders in a democratic way. It is part of our philosophy to practice an intercultural exchange.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

The volunteer will stay in an apartment and have his/her own room. We will provide a ticket to use the public transport in Graz. The volunteer will have breakfast and snack in school from Monday to Friday and lunch from Monday to Thursday. Additionally, the volunteer will get monthly allowance for food. Pocket Money is 150 € for food.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Free Waldorfschool (FWS) was founded by parents and teachers and is part of the worldwide Waldorf/Steiner-School association. FWS Graz is a general education comprehensive school with about 300 pupils and 45 teachers and covers classes 1 to 12. Our teaching is based on the principles of Steiner´s pedagogical guidelines. It gives equal attention to the physical, emotional, intellectual, cultural, and spiritual needs of each pupil and is designed to work in harmony with the different phases of the child’s development. Focus is laid on artistic lessons like music, art, drama theatre and craft-based subjects as stone- and woodwork, tailoring, forging, weaving etc. This kind of education enables students to think and act independently with great interest in progress and development of culture and society. Two volunteers assist our teacher in different subjects.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

A volunteer will live either in a private room in a shared flat or in his/her own room with a host family. He/she could have lunch at the school kitchen and receive self-allowance according to program guidelines. Pocket money is €150/month. A public transport ticket for the city area of Graz will be provided for the total duration of the stay. In the summer month a bicycle will be available

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Private School “Sonnenhaus” offers an alternative education for children aged 6-14 years, based on principles of progressive education, Montessori and nonviolent communication. We aim at supporting and guiding children on their way to becoming responsible confident and open-minded persons. 60 children attend our school. The school integrates volunteers closely into the daily work and community. Two volunteers support teachers in classrooms. Daily work in school has project groups, which work independently but are guided by teachers. Volunteers can accompany children in their learning and during after school care. Volunteers get acquainted with the prepared environment and respective learning materials. We would welcome an active volunteer´s participation in school. Volunteers should share their ideas, knowledge, cultural and liguistical background. Volunteers should be interested in pedagogy.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

The Vulkanschule is a primary and secondary school for pupils aged 6–14. It is a small school, with all together 47 pupils, situated in the countryside in South-Eastern Austria. We aim to create a home-like atmosphere at school and inspire kids to learn with joy. We teach according to Montessori and Jenaplan methods. Our principles are: non-violent communication, respect for the development of the child, the respect for each human being and for the creation. Central ideas of our pedagogy are a holistic, project-oriented, interdisciplinary, and mixed-age education, learner-centred, action-oriented, and eager to keep up the joy of learning. One volunteer is supporting the school staff mainly during the classes and afternoon activities. S/he helps preparing learning materials, assists during lunch time and breaks, develops his/her own project.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

Accommodation: The volunteer will either live with one of the school’s families or in Graz. Food: The Volunteer receives a financial support from EU funds for € 250 every month for self-supply and € 150 pocket money. Transport: The Volunteer will be going by car with somebody of the host family to the school. Otherwise, if the Volunteer lives in Graz, s/he will be going by train from Graz to Feldbach, and by school bus from the city Feldbach directly to the school.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

Cambium is a community, based in Fehring, Austria, which has refurbished old military houses into a sustainable and ecological living complex. We are working on building a working and living space for more than 100 people, where all age groups and different professions, interests and skills are represented. Various craft, agricultural, social and artistic activities are carried out here. We are oriented towards sustainable values. We run a small organic farm, a large community kitchen, practice and office space, various workshops and businesses. A core of our community is a communal event centre, which offers space for learning, exchange and networking, culture and education for people in the region and all around the world. Our values are openness, voluntariness and mutual trust. We develop cooperation based on respect and attentiveness.

ACCOMMODATION, FOOD AND TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS

Volunteers will live in our community in Fehring – Volunteers will be able to eat at our kitchen together with a community. For their free days they will be able to receive self-allowance according to program guidelines. – Volunteers will have bicycles to explore surroundings. We will cover some local transportation costs in case they will go the other towns

TRAINING DURING THE ACTIVITY

Volunteers will attend trainings, organised by a national agency (On-Arrival-Trainig). They will have an access to Online Language Course, and will be supported in learning German. Ongoing training and support will be offered by responsible community members.

PROFILE OF THE VOLUNTEERS

The profile of the volunteer will have general requirements: proactive, motivated to work in a social housing environment, with sense of responsibility, like to work in a team, flexible, with handwork skills, with communication ability, mature to work with social and economic disadvantaged community.

The volunteer has to be between 18 and 30 years, with: good integration capability; willingness to share experiences and cultural habits.
